Editor's Note

Happy New Year (we hope)! In this issue, Lucent introduces its first new switch in years. Also, updates on the AT&T effort to eliminate access charges for IP telephony and the ongoing UNE battle; and an FCC statistical report on local competition revealing that reports of the demise of CLECs (or at least of local competition) are very much exaggerated.

While we can't cover everything that may be of interest, we have seen increasing media reports over the last few months about the attention telecom carriers are providing to the bottom line and to solutions that help them enhance that bottom line with current assets. This is consistent with our own experiences with our clients and continues to be a focus into the new year. We would like to hear from you and answer any questions you may have regarding this trend; or maybe you'd like to share your experiences in this area with our thousands of other subscribers.

FCC because it did not expect to complete the remand proceeding by the January 3, 2003 date the court set for the line-sharing and UNE rules to be vacated. [More] [Top of Page]

Update: Avoiding Access Charges for IP Telephony

As covered in the last issue of ATS Network & Billing Update, the FCC issued a late November notice seeking comment on AT&T’s Petition for Declaratory Ruling that phone-to-phone IP telephony services are exempt from access charges. Over two dozen parties filed comments and the FCC extended the time for reply comments. [More] [Top of Page]

FCC Releases Data on Local Competition

The FCC last month released summary statistics of its latest data on local telephone service competition in the United States. The results may surprise you. [More] [Top of Page]
