SMS Usage Reports
Business Issue: SMS (Short Message Service) and SMSCs (Short Message Service Centers)
deliver all text messages to subscriber phones.
Every time a voice message is left, a text message notification is
sent to the subscriber through the SMSC system.
These systems generate their own CDRs for each message that is
transmitted. CDRs contain
valuable information about the messages including origination time, size of
the message and even the message contents. Each time a subscriber downloads a custom ring-tone, the tone is delivered as
part of a text message that is un-encoded by the handset.
Other applications such as Ping
Pong utilize the SMSCs as their transport mechanism.
CDR Applicability: The SMSC log files contain the CDRs for the SMS traffic. These Call-Detail records can be analyzed to determine usage and patterns for SMS traffic. They can also be used to drill down to application-specific usage. By using this data, each time a ring-tone is downloaded, a record could be sent to the billing system indicating the tone downloaded and the subscriber number. This would allow charges for ring-tones and other similar services to be included as line items on the subscribers' statement. |
